Car accidents are unfortunately all too common on our highways and, typically, are caused by human error. Some may be simple fender-benders, but many are serious and take thousands of lives per year. It is important to do your part by driving safely and obeying all traffic laws. Unfortunately, you can do everything right and by the books, but you cannot control everyone else’s behavior.

However, you can educate yourself by learning the common causes of car accidents and how to avoid them.

  • Speeding. As the old slogan used to say, “Speed kills.” Speeding can make you lose control of your vehicle, which leads to catastrophic results. The higher your speed, the less time you have to stop or react to an obstacle. Always drive at the posted speed, especially in congested areas, and ensure you have enough time and space to quickly stop if necessary.
  • Distracted driving. Driving while distracted becomes a bigger and bigger threat as new gadgets come out. When you get behind the wheel, your only attention should be on driving. That means no talking on the phone, no texting, no eating, no grooming, no messing around with music, no interacting with children or pets, or programming a GPS.
  • Driving drunk. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is deadly and can land you in jail. Hand over the keys to someone sober.
  • Drowsy or fatigued driving. Drowsy driving is extremely dangerous. Lack of sleep can reduce your reaction time, your cognitive function, and your ability to drive safely. If you feel tired, ask someone else to take the wheel, or pull over somewhere safe where you can rest before you start driving again.
  • Tailgaiting. There is never a reason to get too close to the car in front of you unless you want a fender-bender. Always keep a safe distance so you have time to react to sudden stops or turns, especially in bad weather.
  • Bad weather. Many accidents happen in snow or ice because drivers are unprepared to drive in it. In winter weather, remember to slow down, do not tailgate, use your wipers and defrost, and keep your movements slow and deliberate to avoid sliding and skidding out.
  • Night driving. Many accidents happen at night or dusk. Ensure you are using your high beams as appropriate, and are extra alert for cyclists, pedestrians, or animals crossing the road.
