Broadside Collisions
Types of Car Crashes in Delaware: Broadside Collisions
Protecting the rights of the injured in Wilmington, Seaford and Newark, DE
In a broadside collision, the front of one vehicle crashes into the side of another vehicle. Also referred to as T-bone collisions, broadside crashes often result in serious injuries and fatalities. When two vehicles that are in motion collide, the forces are tremendous. In vehicles that have side airbags, the force of the impact will be distributes somewhat, and the seatbelts will also mitigate those forces to some degree, but serious injuries and death can occur depending on the rate of speed and whether the front of the car pushes the car it hits into another vehicle or a stationary object such as a tree, a light pole or a wall. In some accidents, the car that has gotten hit broadside can begin a rollover spiral this possibly causing a secondary crash.
At the law firm of Silverman, McDonald & Friedman, we are here to help Delaware auto accident victims get the compensation they deserve when they have been injured in an accident caused by the negligence of another. We seek justice on our clients’ behalf, and we stop at nothing to protect the rights of the injured.
Causes of broadside car accidents
There many circumstances on the road that can lead to a broadside crash, including:
- Distracted driving. A driver might be scrolling through their feed, or responding to a text message without realizing until it is too late that they just rolled through an intersection.
- Failure to come to a complete stop in an intersection. A driver might come to a very familiar intersection and roll right through because they are confident that there is not usually any oncoming traffic. Then the next thing they know they see a car coming at them out of the corner of their eye.
- Aggressive driving. Road rage, impatience and aggression are a bad combination when you are behind the wheel. When one driver believes that they own the road and ignore the fact that they do not have the right of way, they can cause a terrible accident if another car tries to use their vehicle to retaliate.
- Drunk driving. Getting behind the wheel when you have had too much to drink might be the ultimate in negligent behavior. Alcohol impairs a driver’s judgement causing them to not be as alert as they should be when driving thus putting themselves and other drivers in danger especially at a four-way intersection where T-bone collisions often occur.
- Mechanical failure. A driver is driving along and they hit the brakes but their car doesn’t stop, or maybe your steering wheel all of a sudden is not responding. If you are driving into an intersection with failed brakes.
