We know that when 18-wheelers experience a tire blowout, the trucks themselves can skid and slide, but they are usually okay. When a passenger vehicle experiences a tire blow out, it can lead to a deadly rollover accident:

  • In Arizona, two people were killed and seven were injured in a highway accident when a Chevy Tahoe’s driver’s side rear tire blew out causing the driver to lose control and flip over into oncoming traffic but did not hit any other vehicles. Five of the passengers were ejected when the vehicle rolled over. None of the nine passengers were wearing seat belts, as reported on AZfamily.com.
  • In Texas, four people were killed in a single vehicle rollover crash when they were ejected from their Ford Expedition that rolled over and landed on its roof in the median. The five children in the vehicle were severely injured and taken to a nearby hospital. A tire blowout is the possible cause of the accident according to kxan.com.
  • In Florida, a church van’s tire blew out and caused a deadly rollover crash that killed two people and injured eight more. Four people were ejected from the vehicle. None of the passengers was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The blown-out tire that investigators determined was the cause of the crash, was subject to a recall that had been issued by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The tire failed due to tread separation, which caused the tire to blow out and cause the loss of control of the vehicle according to an NTSB report.

Types of tire defects that can lead to accidents

According to SaferCar.gov, there are nearly 11,000 tire-related vehicle crashes each year in the United States with almost 200 fatalities in those accidents. Tire defects can be caused by many different factors including the age of the tire, tread separation, which can be caused by a defect in their design or manufacture. As in the Florida rollover crash mentioned above, defective tires may be subject to recall when a widespread problem with a tire defect has been discovered. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed a website with a database of vehicle and vehicle parts recalls. Consumers can type in their VIN (vehicle identification number) to learn if their vehicle or parts on their vehicle such as the tires are subject to a recall.

Sometimes a blowout can be caused by improper installation of the tire. When the technician either over-inflates or under-inflates the tire, or just installs it incorrectly it can create a safety hazard for the vehicle.
